The brightness of the twinkly sun through the little cracks in the roof of the hut awoke me to a surprise. A little girl, who seemed to be on the edge of five was staring at me. She had dark brown hair, tan skin, and piercing green eyes. I squinted at her, looking at the chicken that hid behind her leg.
"It's okay Esmeralda. She must be lost. But how did Her not catch her? Maybe she came east and just missed the main path. But no one escapes Her! Not even the smart ones. Wait! She must be the girl who escaped from that house a bit west of here! That's it. What do you think Esmeralda? Same? I know! It seems so weird she was able to make it. Look! She's awake!" I groaned and rubbed my eyes. She was talking to someone, but I couldn't figure out what. Is there someone behind me? I scrambled up and as soon as I did I was already at the opposite wall of the hut. I looked behind me, but no one was there. All there was was a little broken doll with its hair all bunched up in knots. Was she talking to the doll? The chicken squeaked a few times and laid an egg.
"Thank you Esmeralda! I still can't cook it though. I wonder if the girl might want something to drink. I'm low on berries so I might have to go out tonight or tomorrow. Maybe the girl knows how to cook! That's how she survived! I'll ask her. Girl? Do you know how to cook?" I shook my head, very confused on why she was talking to a chicken. But to be fair, I talk to the voices. And the voices seem to be the least of my worries now. I have realized what ever was in there, wanted us to stay.
You think I'm the least for your worries? Think again young blood. I think you might be forgetting I'm the one who controls you, and I can hear everything your thinking. And stop calling me the voices! My friends will only come if you try and be the little teenage rebel you are. We control you. Haven't I told you to call me Foni? Or are you brainless?
Im not brainless! Is that your version of are you deaf? Well, I'm neither. I just want to know who this girl is! And most of all why she's so young! I'm scared for my life right now, and you aren't making it any better by calling me young blood! I won't call you Foni until you call me Bermi!
The vapor in the skies rest at rainfall in the night young blood. The vapor in the skies rest at rainfall young blood. The vapor in the skies rest at rainfall young blood. Say okay.
No! I won't! I'm not taking orders from you!
Maybe you will from me?
A deeper voice than the other one echoed in my head. I stared at the wall thinking at what it might be.
"Do you want a strawberry?" the little girl handed me a single strawberry on a white cheese cloth. I turned to her to say thank you, but she seemed a bit alarmed.
"You...you're face is a bit... pale... and um... you're eyes are a bit scratched up."she politely said. I wiped my face with my hand and looked down to the cheese cloth. Drips of fresh dark red blood were sliding down my face onto it, as if I was crying blood. I set the strawberry aside and rubbed the cheese cloth on my face, hoping to clog up whatever wound there was, but it only made it worse.
Will you listen to me now?
The deeper voice spoke. It was him who made my eyes bleed. Or her, I will never know. I dabbed my finger a bit on my face to check for blood, and there wasn't as much as the first time, but there was still some.
"I've never heard of someone who cries blood... What do you think Esmeralda? You haven't either? Well, I guess this is new to you too then. It smells of rotting. Maybe it was just the blood. Have you seen anything suspicious around here Esmeralda? No? Okay. I guess you really only stay with me, so anything you see I will most likely see too. Does it hurt girl?" I shook my head.
"I'm Sally, by the way. You don't talk much. But that's okay. I've only talked to a chicken for the past year, and you might've just talked to yourself."
"I'm Bermi... I talk to the voices" I whisper.
It was us making you bleed... And don't forget there's another one.
